Photography couldnt be processed until the 1980's so "Woodcut" (a form of engraving) was used to show
the image.

In the 1900's Roger Fenton would photography The Crimean War and produce photos of soldiers in the war, they would be used as propagander and photojournalism. The pupil would be able to see photos from the War and want more. Therefore, there was a popular demand for news worhty events and printed media became more popular.
Back then to take the photography of the "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" Fenton would have seven techniqutions to take one image and his equipment would have to be wheeled about.
