Places: Evaluation Summary

Alien / Foreign Environment

I chose two different images for my alien/foreign environment because I captured images in two different places and so to me they are both alien/ foreign images. I kept the use of colour in the image of China Town because when you go there, it full of bright vibrant colours. With Salford Quays the mixture of blues and browns complement each other. I added clarity to the bridge because it gives it a dream like feeling and I associate bridges with dreams.

Significant Place

When photographing my significant place I wanted to get the images across so that people would know what I was trying to portray without having to explain. Personally I think that I’ve achieved that from the images I’ve captured and the use of different and bright colours. I chose to capture the images by looking up at them to portray the view from a young child. I went on a nice bright day which is what I wanted because my aim was to get the richness of colour from outside, also when I went to primary school it was a important and a joyful time I wanted to get the view of that across using the brightness of the sun. I decided to keep the not edit two of the images because of the use of colour but I changed the one with the coat hanger on because I wanted to get the message across of how its been awhile since I was at school. I used lens baby on the gate to symbolise a distant memory feeling and how at the time it felt very surreal and like a dream going to school in England for the first time.

Urban / City

I chose to photograph Manchester City because I’ve been there several times so its familiar to me and I had an idea of what images I wanted to capture. My aim was to go and capture large buildings to symbolise a big city. The composition of the image would be to capture all of buildings using a wide-angle lens and to capture them by looking up at the buildings to emphasise how tall the buildings are and how small we are. I decided the use one of the images that was in the dark so I had an image that was captured at night. Also the use of light on it highlights the shape of the wheel.

Countryside / Wilderness

I only have one image for wilderness because my significant images I thought were more important so I submitted one more image for significant and only one for wilderness to make up my chosen eight images. I chose to make the image panoramic so you can get an overall view of the scenery and there was wasted paste above the hills so I cropped it so there wasn’t as much and the focus was more on the hills. My aim was to get an overall view of the scenery, the weather was lovely the day I went out and there was a slight frost in the air so the river had some parts frozen over and the ground was nice and crisp from the cold. I added some clarity to it just to make the edges soft making it look more appealing to the eye and to give it a dream like feeling to it. If I were to go out again I would try to capture three different exposures of the same image so I could experiment

Fine Art

Fine Art is about making an image in an art way but has to have meaning behind it.

Sally Mann is known for her fine art images, by capturing a series of photos with her children in them. Below are some examples of her work.

Candid

Candid photography is an image that isn't posed, caught in ambient light showing some kind of feeling and emotion through the characters in the photograph.

Without knowing what this image is about, you can see the expression on her face and can work come to a conclusion that she is upset and is thinking about something.

This image is similar, the way he has his head in her hands shows he is thinking or tired, but you can see the emotion within the image

Martin Parr is known for his street photography but his work is that of a candid nature. He is known for his humour he captures within his photography. More information on Martin Parr see link http://www.martinparr.com/index1.html

Corporate

Corporate images can either be head shots or can show more of the person's personality.

This is an example of corporate portrait. With including the background you understand that this person in the music business and because of the recording equipment you can assume that this person has his own recording studio.

From this portrait you can tell that this person is charge/works for a business company. From the desk and the chair you can know that he is in always in meetings and because if the background you can tell the meeting room is a tall business symbolising his position in the business.

Environmental

Environmental portraits shows someone's personality through the image but at the same time if i was to take that person out of the image it would still look like a good image.

Fine Art

Ideas:

1) Using a film camera, enlarging the images and using different patterns and exposing them on the person. (Influence from Man Ray)

Corporate

Ideas:

1) Business man, in charge of the ware house at Euro Spec

I'm going to photograph him in the ware house to show what area he's in charge of.

2) Nurse in charge of all the paper work and the other nurses.

The nurse is in charge of a care home so she asked that nothing that could give away any of the patients was in the image, so i will try not to get anything in the background but because she's in charge of all the paper work, I'll have her holding a folder.

Environmental (My chosen subject to capture 8 images)

Ideas:

1) I spoke to a few young girls and asked where they would go when they are either stressed or want to relax. My aim is to go along with these girls and take images of the environment they go to.

My aim is to try these places and capture people who are doing interesting topics.

Places: Planning

Wilderness

Ideas:

1) The views further up Harwood, over looking Clitheroe

2) The view over looking Burnley

3) The lakes in Abby Village.

I decided to go to Harwood and capture the water and the hills of Clitheroe in the background. I'm taking my wide lens to capture as much of the scenery as possible. My aim is to capture an image that can be made panoramic. I will go on a nice day and capture some images, if i am not satisfied with the images I will visit it again with more of an idea with what I want to capture.

Significant place

Ideas:

1) Primary School (I moved over from South Africa and my first school was at St Gabriel's Primary School. I went into the year two, so my aim is to go back and capture my first classroom and playground)

2) My first home in England (When I moved over here I stopped at my auntie's house so to me this was my first home in England)

I decided to choose my Primary School because there is more images i can capture that will show how important my significant place is to me. My aim is to capture the images look up at them to symbolise, how small I was and everything looked so big to me at the time. I can only go once to the school so I

City/Urban

I decided to choose Manchester City centre that way when I visit the sites of Manchester I can walk over China Town and get my alien/foreign place.

My aim is the to capture the images as if your looking up at them to symbolise how tall and big the buildings are. I'm using a wide lens 18-55mm so i can capture as much of the building as possible. I've been to Manchester before so I have a faint idea what I want to capture (The Urbis Building, The Town Hall, The Manchester Evening Wheel, views over looking Manchester etc.)

When I went to an exhibition with University, we went to Salford Quays to me this was a foreign looking place so I captured the bridge which is known for Salford Quays. I went to China Town as well to capture some more foreign/alien places. I've never been to China Town so I will have a look round and capture interesting scenery that shows China Town off well. If I am not satisfied with my images I will go back and see what else I can capture but I will plan

People: Fine Art, Research into Man Ray

My idea for my fine art portrait is to use Man Ray as my influence, by exposing images over my model and giving it a fine art feel.

Man Rays work

Man Ray thought that the figure or a women is like the figure of a violin. So he exposed the F shapes onto a female

body to symbolise a violin.

Pictograms (rayogram)

He would use objects and expose light onto printing paper and it would bring up the objects on the paper.

"A “rayograph” was made by placing a three-dimensional object or series of objects on top of a piece of photographic paper and exposing it to light. These images lyrically and impressionistically represented objects such as ropes, light bulbs, and thumb tacks." Taken from website below.

People: Candid

Below is an example of a candid image I captured.

When I was at a dance practise with some young students I saw Amy (the person in the image) sat in the courner on her phone. I captured the image because it look like she's in her own little world and it just shows how much technology is taking over and taking over peoples life.

People: Environment

For my aim of the environmental portrait, I spoke to a few young girls about where they would go when are going to relax or when they are stressed and need to get away. I then went with them and captured there environment around them.

One of Megan's main hobbies is swimming and this is one side to her. When she is stressed or wants to go and relaxed she would goes to the lilly pond near her and would stand in the water so it became part of her. I rotated the image to symbolise that when she is in the water, she is the only there away from reality.

When Laura is either stressed or wants to somewhere to relate she always goes to the park near her house. Her main reason for going to the park is because its peaceful and quite and she would always sit on the slide and look out into the open. So, I've captured her sat on the slide while having the scenery in the background to symbolise the open space.

Across the road from Jades house is a field with a broken down building on it. So when she's either stressed or wants to get away from everything, she would always go to this place and sit down in the door way and look out into the distance.

Anna would always walk up the road and lean on the wall watching cars go by.

Sophie would always walk into the town centre near her and sit on the stairs looking out into the open area. Watching people walk up the stairs.

Charly would always walk down the the park near her and stand underneath this tree and watch the ducks on the water.

Jennifer would go and sit by the clock tower and look out into the park and think to herself.

Across the road from Heathers house is a cemetery thats look out over Blackburn. So, when ever she is sad, or wants to get away from everything she would go and sit near the entrance and look over at the views on Blackburn.

People: Corporate

I photographed a Nurse who is in charge of the residence in an Care Home. Her main job is the paper work and making sure everything is in order.

I photographed it quiet cropped around the person because, it was a care home it is quiet confidential and secret. So i wanted to get that across through my image. I had a chair in the background that was old looking which would give a hint but it had someones name on it. Therefore the way i photographed it was constricted, so i made the decision to leave it out. The only thing with this image is that there is hardly any of personality that can be seen.

So, I decided to choose this image for corporate because she is holding folders which is attached to her symbolising that she is in charge of the paper work, and your slightly looking up at her to show that she is in charge and above you. She is smiling because she enjoys her job and even though its all paperwork she doesn't mind.

I went to photograph a business man who is in charge of all the stock in a massive warehouse. I captured in the warehouse to show you what he's in charge of. I got him smiling because he likes his job and is happy within his work.

If I were to go out and photograph corporate photography I would try and get business man who own there own business. Also I would try and get more of there personality through.

HDR

HDR- High Dynamic Range records a greater range of tonal details, by having three image exactly the same with different exposures and merge the three together it gives you an effect which is called HDR

Below are three images that have different exposures that I've merged together and cropped to give a panoramic effect. Which my images you can slightly see that it is HDR.

The first three are my chosen image to merge together.

The other two images are HDR images.

Katy's session

Today in Katy's class we got into groups of 4 and discussed our images and how we would place the images If we were to make a book. We tried to keep the images that were similar and fit well with each other.

Unfortunately I'm not making a book but i found it interesting discussing my works with other people and seeing how they would arrange my work.

Places: Alien/Foreign

I went to Manchester and took a turn into China Town, because I had never been there before, to me it was very alien and foreign.

I came across this image, along a wall on a car park and I thought it was amazing but then I people just walk pass it like it was a plan wall. It then occurred me that people who are from around the area are used to seeing this image. Whereas because this was my first time in a alien environment I found it to be amazing.

I kept this image like this so you can see the scale of the art of the side of the wall.

I like how it felt relaxed and no where else would have anything like this.

Places: Lens baby

A Lens Baby composer

The lens baby is based on a ball and socket configuration. You tilt the lens baby to

your preferred angle and manually focus on spot using the focusing ring.

The lens baby focuses on the area you want and makes the rest of the image blur out.

Below are some examples of work photographed using a lens baby.

The little baby's head is in focus while the rest of the body is blurred. It It makes you focus more of the face rather than the body.

The dogs head and part of his ear is in focus and the rest of the image is out of focus

A small section of the bridge is in focus and the rest is blurred. It makes the image tense and play with the eyes.
