Katy's session

Today in Katy's class we got into groups of 4 and discussed our images and how we would place the images If we were to make a book. We tried to keep the images that were similar and fit well with each other.

Unfortunately I'm not making a book but i found it interesting discussing my works with other people and seeing how they would arrange my work.

Places: Alien/Foreign

I went to Manchester and took a turn into China Town, because I had never been there before, to me it was very alien and foreign.

I came across this image, along a wall on a car park and I thought it was amazing but then I people just walk pass it like it was a plan wall. It then occurred me that people who are from around the area are used to seeing this image. Whereas because this was my first time in a alien environment I found it to be amazing.

I kept this image like this so you can see the scale of the art of the side of the wall.

This is a cropped version, so you can see the detail more

I like how it felt relaxed and no where else would have anything like this.

Below are contact sheets from the day of the shoot.

Places: Lens baby

A Lens Baby composer

The lens baby is based on a ball and socket configuration. You tilt the lens baby to
your preferred angle and manually focus on spot using the focusing ring.

The lens baby focuses on the area you want and makes the rest of the image blur out.

Below are some examples of work photographed using a lens baby.

The little baby's head is in focus while the rest of the body is blurred. It It makes you focus more of the face rather than the body.

The dogs head and part of his ear is in focus and the rest of the image is out of focus

A small section of the bridge is in focus and the rest is blurred. It makes the image tense and play with the eyes.

Photojournalism up to the 1970's

Photography couldnt be processed until the 1980's so "Woodcut" (a form of engraving) was used to show the image.

Example of "Woodcut"

In the 1900's Roger Fenton would photography The Crimean War and produce photos of soldiers in the war, they would be used as propagander and photojournalism. The pupil would be able to see photos from the War and want more. Therefore, there was a popular demand for news worhty events and printed media became more popular.

Back then to take the photography of the "The Valley of the Shadow of Death" Fenton would have seven techniqutions to take one image and his equipment would have to be wheeled about.

The Valley of the Shadow of Death"

Photos were used in the media as use of evidence.

Below are some photographers well known in that era for there photos.

William Carrick (People photography, 1859)

Timothy O'Sullivan (1986)

T.G Dugdale 1867 (Piebrown girl)
Seen more in galleries, the originals were kept in Musuems such as London, Paris, Berlin etc..
The woodcut would be more in the media. Photography was being used for evidence of society.

Willoughby Hooper
Captain in the British Army, know for his work "Loss of the hurd"

John Thompson
Limited edition book called "The street Crawlers of Victorian London" He was foreign to a particular culture (not easy to take images of people on the streets)

Jacob Reece (New York)
Experienced of imigrants go to New York and trying to find work (New York know for being the "Land of Dreams") He went there to capture how the other half live. So the people with no work and no home.

O'Hoscar Anschutz
He made his images with a half tone print effect. Fom then technology developed upto the 1900's such as detail photos

People: Fine Art

For my fine art images I am going to do something similar to Man Ray by taking a image of a girl and exposing different patterns over her face.

Below are what I've experimented with and my final two images.

The image of the person itself is slightly blurred but I feel that it works with what vibe I'm trying to achieve through the image. It makes the person look faint and ghost looking, making the images exposed on her stand out more which what I'm trying to achieve.

The image exposed on top stand out but there needs to be more going on top of her that is interesting.

This time I used a plastic wallet and scratched out a pattern then exposed onto the print paper but it looks rushed and not professional looking compared to the pattern that is black.

I tried exposing over the image this time trying to use a work to express her emotions. I used the word "pain" and exposed in all over her face. In some area they came up fainter then other even though i used the same amount of exposure of light. Also it could do with being repeated more times so it covers all of the image.

I tried exposing the image on different angle to make the image look full but it doesn't look correct because the middle section has more going on then the outer area so I couldn't make it look all even in the image.

I forgot the cover around the cut out image so it showed the outline that way covered.

This image I used a maker pen on a plastic wallet but the maker pen was to large so it covered most of her face and looked very unprofessional.

My aim when enlarging these images was to experiment and to see the outcome of the image when exposing the negative and the image together. My next aim is to use different images to expose over the person.

Below are images that I've print out on printable acetate to fit the size of the negative. Then I will project the negative and acetate on to ilford paper to create the image over the person.

Below are some more images that I experimented with using the images I printed onto printable acetate. I used one image exposure but on some i tried using two or three to fill the pattern out and make it more interesting.

The idea for it was suitable for my fine art but it was just using a pattern exposed over the image, but it had no meaning, so because she loves music and plays guitar and has singing lessons I've exposed images they show her personality. Below are some more experiments using images that relate to the person.

The guitar needs to be over her face more because its starts to disappear towards the top and the exposure need to be longer, she look very pale and white.

The pattern exposure over her face has a copyright mark that can be slightly seen, Therefore, I can't use this image

The person on the print looks very white and one her eyes are slightly closed.

The person looks slightly too dark and the acetate on top, you can see where its not been covering the whole of the print, so a faint line has appeared above her head.

The pattern exposed over the image had a copyright size over it that i didn't realise but when i exposed it, it comes up clearly. So I couldn't use the pattern.

I found that the pattern on the print was too harsh, so I printed the pattern acetate, similar size to the print paper, so I can expose the pattern for as long as I want.

Below are some examples of of me exposing the pattern onto of the printing paper. I've used the same image but flipped the negative to and exposed two different patterns to show two sides to her personality.

The pattern is coming off the print so below is one that I've redone.

I have decided to use this image to symbolise singing side of her. You can see the person in the background but at the same time you can see the pattern exposed over her. The pattern can be seen clearly but isn't too harsh. I chose this pattern because at first when she starts to sing she is shy but then soon gets over her nerves, I felt that the way the notes but up symbolised it.

This pattern made the exposure look pale and white, also the acetate didn't cover the whole of the print so you can see a line where the pattern has finished.

This image shows how she loves guitar but the pattern is narrow and doesn't cover her face. I want to symbolise the fact that she loves guitar and plays it all the time thats its taking over herself and this doesn't symbolise it. Whereas as the one below symbolises it more.

I decided to choose this image to show the side of her that loves guitar. I chose this image because you can see its a guitar even though it fully doesn't show all of the guitar but its retro looking and this shows more of her personality.

I feel that it was a long process getting to my final images but I like the idea I've chosen and I felt I've learnt a lot not only about what fine art is but more about using the darkroom to expose images.

Location lighting

Today we went out and took pictures of people using the sun and reflectors to light subjects

He stood looking towards the light so you can he is squinting and you can see some harsh shadows on his face. So next time we'll face looking into the sun so the sun is behind him. The other thing we need to think more about next time is the background, its quite distracting and would be better with a plain background.

Lighting Technique: Soft hard lighting

We used one light high to make the lighting look hard but the skin soft. The lighting was continuous tungsten. The setting on my camera was on AV set to ISO 1600 F5.6. This was my camera can work out the shutter speed.

The light above highlights one side of her key features.

(Monochrome) On my camera settings I change the settings from standard to monochrome making the image look black and white without having to edit it afterwards.

Another continuous tungsten was placed on the other side so it lite the other side of her face.
